It is certainly testing times for Welsh business but there are positive initiatives that we should focus on if we are to retain our optimism about the future.

Economic activity did slowdown in 2018 with a 1% growth in Gross Value Added (GVA) compared with 1.1% in 2017.  But this is expected to improve with current forecasts improving to 1.4% until 2021.  However, it remains below the forecasted 1.7% growth expected across the UK.  Couple that with the global environment and political uncertainty and it results in a drop-in business confidence.   Recent reports suggest Welsh Business confidence fell to its lowest level in three months due largely to economic optimism falling sharply f...

Much has been made in recent years of the north south divide and the various political parties plans to spread prosperity to all Britain’s regions after warnings that economic activity is becoming ever more concentrated in London and the South-East. But is it having any impact or is the South still fuelling the UK economy?

The region has a thriving business community.  The latest statistics and forecasts are really encouraging for the region with both economic and employment levels predicting strong growth over the next few years.

On current trends, the two most prosperous regions – London and the South East - would account for 40% of national output by the end of the next par...

An important legislative change is about to happen which will hopefully enable greater access to invoice finance. A draft Statutory Instrument under section 1 of the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Act 2015 has been placed before Parliament for approval which contains new Regulations to nullify the effect of restrictive terms in B2B contracts that can limit access to finance for small businesses.

Since the credit crisis, the Government has been keen to encourage the alternative finance market, including asset-based finance, for SME’s. Following extensive consultation, the new measures will enable businesses, particularly smaller businesses lower down the supply chain, to access wide...

The Northern Powerhouse continues to be held up as a driver of economic growth but how strong is the pedestal that they media headlines put us on?

In my opinion we need to understand where our growth is coming from and what could hinder that growth.

If we look at growth firstly, latest economic growth figures show that since the Northern Powerhouse was launched in 2014, it has outstripped many of its rivals including that of Greater London.  With Greater Manchester grabbing the top spot with a 6.8% growth, followed by West Yorkshire at 6.1% and Sheffield at 5% compared to Greater London at 4.6%.

However, what we see is the level of growth varies dependent on the industry...

“Uncertainty” is a word we are all reading a lot lately in the financial and business press. Which is unsurprising, when you look at the reasons why. Who could have foreseen the impact a single TV series would have on the plastics industry? Or how consumers would turn against diesel engines after the Volkswagen scandal? Not to mention what’s currently happening up and down the high street with the Landlords CVA seemingly the latest “must have” product. The knock-on effects of these issues will be felt across a wide range of sectors, as time goes on.

If you have a small to medium sized business you’ll know the impact that late payment of invoices can have on your cash flow. There are, however, steps you can take to help ensure your invoices get paid on time.
